Gayle Manchin, Former West Virginia First Lady, Nominated for Federal Role

Gayle Conelly Manchin, an educator and wife of Senator Joe Manchin, has been nominated to serve as the federal co-chair of the Appalachian Regional Commission.

Manchin, 75, has a long history of public service in West Virginia. She served as the state's first lady from 2005 to 2010, when her husband was governor. She also served as the state's secretary of education from 2011 to 2017.

In her new role, Manchin will oversee the Appalachian Regional Commission's efforts to promote economic development in the Appalachian region. The commission provides grants and technical assistance to communities in 13 states, including West Virginia.

Manchin's nomination was announced by President Joe Biden on Tuesday. She will need to be confirmed by the U.S. Senate before she can take office.
